Starting a jewelry brand can feel exciting… and also overwhelming. There are so many options, materials, and styles that it’s easy to fall down endless research rabbit holes before ever starting.
If that’s you, don’t worry. We’re making this super simple.
I started my jewelry business over six years ago with about $100–$200, and it eventually grew into a six-figure creative business. So if you’re just starting, you’re exactly where you need to be.
If you want to start a jewelry business but feel stuck on where to begin, these are the three decisions that create the foundation of your jewelry brand.
What Do You Decide First When Starting a Jewelry Brand?
When starting a jewelry brand, the first things to decide are: how your jewelry will be made, what materials you will use, the overall vibe of your brand.
Once those three things are clear, everything else becomes much easier.

Step One: Decide How Your Jewelry Will Be Made
There are three common ways to start a jewelry business.
You can wholesale jewelry, which means you curate pieces that are already made and resell them through your brand.
You can handmake jewelry, using techniques like beading, charm jewelry, wire wrapping, or metalsmithing.
Or you can design jewelry and work with a manufacturer to produce your designs.
There is no right or wrong choice. The best option depends on your budget, creativity, and how involved you want to be in production.
Step Two: Choose Your Jewelry Materials
The next step when starting a jewelry brand is choosing your materials.
For silver jewelry, sterling silver is a reliable and common option.
For gold-tone jewelry, many beginners start with gold plated sterling silver or PVD plating, which can offer durability at a more affordable price point.
If you’re unsure which material to choose, order samples and test them. Wear them, see how they hold up, and choose the material you feel confident selling.
Starting with one main material helps your brand stay cohesive and makes your jewelry easier for customers to trust.
Step Three: Decide Your Jewelry Brand Vibe
Your brand vibe is what makes your jewelry recognizable.
When someone sees your pieces together, they should feel cohesive even if each item is unique.
Think about the lifestyle of the person you are designing for. Are they active and outdoorsy? Minimal and classic? Bold and expressive?
When you design your jewelry around a clear lifestyle or aesthetic, your brand becomes much easier for customers to understand and connect with.
Your Jewelry Brand Foundation
Starting a jewelry business doesn’t have to be complicated.
Focus on these three things first:
Decide how your jewelry will be made, choose your materials, and define your brand vibe.
Once those are clear, you can start sampling, testing, and building your jewelry brand with much more confidence.
If I could start a jewelry business with $100 and grow it into a six-figure brand, you can absolutely start yours too!
